How does this work?

Google Now Tracks Your Credit Card Purchases and Connects Them to Its Online Profile of You

Sometimes I think I know something, and then there are times like this when I just don't get it. I don't understand how this is done. I have Google Plus and Drive on my Android phone, but I haven't given Google my name or payment info. I don't use the internet while on the go on my mobile phone. My internet usage on a desktop computer includes the blocking of ads and scripts. So first, how could Google know one's name if one doesn't give it, and how are they watching my brick and mortar card transactions - which are 99% for groceries?

Oh yeah, also, I do not ever want a Target Red Card, and hate it when a checker there doesn't take No for an answer when doing their prescribed job in offering it. Because of that tactic, I use cash only when shopping at Target - I don't want them to have my card info in their system. I do buy food there, and noticed they give discounts if you get their "app". So I put the app on a tablet, because it has no phone number for Target to exploit. Haven't used it yet, and I tend to forget to take it, lol.
